As with any gaming console, there has been a history of PS3 price drop maneuvers. However, that does not mean that the system has always been steady. The suggested retail price for the original 20 GB model was around ¥50,000. Strangely enough, when the 40 GB model was released in Japan, it was sold for ¥10,000 less than the original model. There were also concerns when the President of Sony, Ken Kutaragi, announced his plans to retire in 2007. These plans were stated to simply be part of his long term retirement plans, and it was argued that it had nothing to do with any of the problems that the PS3′s price tag was having.

Interestingly enough, PlayStation 3 prices were dropped almost as soon as they came out in the Western market as well. The unit was originally priced around $800 for the 20 GB model and around $840 for the 60 GB model. However, it does not even seem that Sony ever sold them at these prices. Instead, they bumped them right down to around $500 and $600 respectively. This essentially means that the company was selling the units at a loss with the PS3 price drop. One might assume that they were doing this both in the Far East and in North America.

With a vibrant used gaming market dragging prices down, gamers can enjoy the benefits of playing their unit without a giant price tag. In fact, some people might want to pick up an extra add-on device while they are at it. The prices of these have probably dropped along with the actual price of the unit. The device is usually viewed as a weird sales gimmick that came around immediately after the video game market saturation of 1983 in an attempt to set Nintendo devices apart from the competition. When sales gimmick like these don’t work out, you can expect a PS3 price drop by the game developers.

The video game market has been saturated with gimmicks more than games at times, and the 1980s television show TV Powww should prove that. However, some fans should certainly be pleased with the PlayStation Eye. Overall, though, the console is extremely solid and just about everyone could benefit from a PS3 price drop to make their budget stretch further.
